Brother Patrick T. Shea, O.F.M.,
J.C.D., is both a civil and a canon lawyer as well
as a professed member of Sacred Heart Province of the
Order of Friars Minor. Brother Shea currently serves as
General Counsel of the Legal Office of the Catholic
Diocese of Cleveland. He earned his J.D. degree in 1976
from the Law School of the University of Wisconsin and
his J.C.D. degree from The Catholic University of
America in 1993. Brother Shea will provide us with an
overview of the origins and applicability of canon law,
which is the internal law of the Roman Catholic Church,
in a manner that is interesting and useful for civil
lawyers.
